Okay, I think I just ate one of my top 3 chocolate cakes. My opinion could have been swayed by the fact that I was super hungry. I broke down and ate a piece of cake before dinner. It is the Cocoa Buttermilk Birthday Cake from Dorie Greenspan's Baking From My Home To Yours. I guess I had never noticed the recipe because there was not a picture. I am a sucker for good food pics.
She describes the frosting as "a soft, sweet chocolate frosting with just a hint of malt flavor and a slight tickle of sugar on the tongue" and that intrigued me. Sure enough it does retain a bit of graininess, I suppose from the brown sugar? It is very light and so soft that it is hard to frost perfectly, though if you beat it longer it is supposed to stiffen up more. I thought it was perfect. Perhaps I will call this my birthday cake. My birthday is next Saturday and my daughters is the following Monday. Friday we will have our 3rd annual Mother/Daughter Fancy Meal Movie Day. It is always enjoyable.
