We wanted to leave town by 8 AM on Sunday. We were all packed and we just had to throw on our traveling cloths and get going. Even after stopping to fill up our gas tank, we still got on the road at 7:45. We decided to just snack on what we had, and stop for breakfast in Mississippi. By the time we got to Vicksburg we were pretty hungry. I had been slowly rationing my Tervis full of coffee. I was ready for breakfast. We pulled into a McDonald's and ate. I eat fast food so infrequently that it is SO good when I eat it. At least McDonald's, I usually can't even finish the meals at most places. It is funny, I have lost my appreciation of nearly all artificial or processed foods, but I wholeheartedly enjoy Mickey D's. Perhaps it is because I can only recall 1-2 times that I have eaten it this year...
We got back on the road and didn't stop until we got to Pensacola. I have to say that my kids are the perfect car riders. They always have been, but it is really nice on road trips. They never did fall asleep, neither did I, but they are very well-behaved. I couldn't have considered driving if they were not great at riding.
As we were driving through Alabama and Florida, we saw a million Hardee's signs. I do not remember ever eating at a Hardee's so we decided to eat lunch there in Pensacola. Bad decision. First, it took us forever to order because we were not familiar with the menu. The girl at the counter had questionable hygiene, and that never makes you comfortable at a restaurant. When I got my burger I discovered that it was not only slathered in Mayo, which I have a serious issue with, but it also had a hair on top. I am really sorry for the tmi! So I tried my best to force down some fries so I could last until dinner, but I really just wanted to get out of there. I was glad when we filled up our tank and got back on the road.
We didn't stop again until we made it to Destin. This is when the drive started getting really beautiful. It is one of the great reasons to drive as well. We found our hotel without any problems. It was a 3 year old Wingate, and perfectly nice. We checked in, changed into our swimsuits, and found the beach access. It was probably about 3:30 by now.
The beach was absolutely beautiful.
This was Ryan's first glimpse of the ocean/gulf. He was a little wary of the waves. He pretty much just pretended to surf at the very edge of the waves. He wouldn't allow us to carry him out any deeper. The waves were pretty strong, and they came up very close to the buildings.
I didn't want to get my camera wet, so I only had it out for a short while. Justin and Kacey were pretty far out, so I mainly just got pictures of Ryan. I did get some good ones that I am going to frame.
We only stayed at the beach for about an hour. The kids really wanted to try out the pool at our hotel. Sad I know. We drove back to our hotel and swam in the pool for about an hour. Then we went upstairs, took a shower, and got ready for dinner at Dewey Destin. When we got there we found out that there was quite a line. This place is very well-hidden, so we took this to mean that it was good.
Luckily before long the view got even prettier.
Before long we were ordering our meals and sitting down. I had the Mahi Mahi. I only managed to get a picture of my meal.
You could tell the fish was really fresh, but the whole meal was very under seasoned. The corn was virtually inedible. I saw an employee dumping a big frozen box of them into a steamer tray. It wasn't even good quality frozen corn. Oh well. All in all, it was just okay. I am still glad we went though.
After we left the restaurant, we swung by Target to grab a bath poof. I had bought two new ones for the trip and forgot them. I cannot live without my bath poof. Justin and I also picked up a new belt for each of us.
After Target, we went back to our hotel and passed out for the night.
To be continued.... Tomorrow- Disney World!
